October 16-20

Assignments listed here represent the "Plan" for the week.  Plans of course are subject to change as needed, so this should not be considered the last word on what will take place in class or will be assigned for homework.  When plans do change however, the changes will be reflected here (hopefully by the evening of the day in which they are known to exist).

Progress Reports arrive on Monday 10/23

All 7th Grade ELA Classes

Monday

  • Students will begin the day with what is the Monday Grammar Warm-Up focusing on the difference between Two, Too, and To.  This week, will focus on the use and proof of "Too"  Students will be introduced to the proof and attempt to use and prove their use of the word in a brief writing response.  Volunteers will share sentences from their writing.  Students will then document their understanding in their Writer's and Reader's Notebooks.

  • Students will then collaboratively read and respond to an introduction to the Graphic Novel genre.  Once they have answered the discussion questions, they will construct their own response to a question concerning if Graphic Novels are a legitimate form of literature or no more than comic books.  Their response will be in the form of a tweet with no more than 140 characters.  Students will review the ideas submitted by their classmates and take a poll, which will begin discussion tomorrow.

  • The 2nd half of the Block will be committed to WIN time.

Homework: Students should read their independent reading novel for 30 minutes tonight and document their reading on their reading log. They also need to complete their 2nd Dialectical Response by the end of the week.

Tuesday

  • Students will begin class with a discussion about the background article they responded to yesterday.  We will look at the results of the poll along with some of the responses that were submitted.

  • Students will then begin their first reading of Nimona focusing their annotations on new vocabulary, character, and questions that are raised by the text.  Once they have completed their reading, students will discuss the text with their new team and jot down answers to a series of discussion questions.  Results of this discussion will be discussed further in the full class setting.

Wednesday

Thursday

Students will comment on lines that suggest the most meaning for them.  They will then write a reaction to the poem that explores what the author is attempting to say about his daughter and finally examine his unconventional writing style and attempt to draw a conclusion from his abandonment of some of the expected rules of capitalization.

  • Students will complete a close read of Nimona assuming the role of one of the main characters with the purpose of finding evidence they need to convince the other main character to fight according to their style.  Students will need several convincing reasons.

  • Students will then move into their teams to determine the rules they will observe for their debate, and prepare their talking points for tomorrow's debate.

  • The 2nd half of the Block will be committed to WIN time.

  • Students will then begin the debate they prepared for yesterday.

  • Following the debate, students will reflect on the experience noting what they did well, and what they can see they could have done better.
