September 18 - 22

Assignments listed here represent the "Plan" for the week.  Plans of course are subject to change as needed, so this should not be considered the last word on what will take place in class or will be assigned for homework.  When plans do change however, the changes will be reflected here (hopefully by the evening of the day in which they are known to exist).

All 7th Grade ELA Classes

Monday

  • Students will begin the day with the Monday Grammar Warm-Up focusing on the difference between There, Their, and They're.  Today, we will focus on the use and proof of "There"  Students will be introduced to the proof and attempt to use and prove their use of the word in a brief writing response.  Volunteers will share sentences from their writing.  Students will then document their understanding in their Writer's and Reader's Notebooks.

  • Students will then complete a pre-reading activity to prepare for our reading of "7th Grade" by Gary Soto.  The activity is called Probable Passage.  Students will examine a group of words related to the story and attempt to determine some aspects of the story.  Results will be shared and discussed.

  • We will then log in to Studysync, the online text resource for language arts and look over the navigation features students will experience with assignments and readings from this resource.  Students will view a video introduction to the story, then read and discuss the opening scene of the story.

  • The 2nd half of the block, WIN time,  will be committed to the I-Ready independent reading work.

Homework: Students should read their independent reading novel for 30 minutes tonight and document their reading on their reading log.  Students also have 4 Word Work words to complete before the end of the week.

Tuesday

  • Students will begin the class with a brief warm-up on using context clues to determine the meanings of unfamiliar words that they encounter in their reading.

  • Students will then experience a lesson on strategies for annotating a text.  We will examine a question that students will be answering and annotate supporting text to generate support for their answers.  This will involve the previous day's reading of "7th Grade"

  • We will then complete the reading of "7th Grade" and review the text to find passages that reveal the true nature of the main character and how he changes over the course of the text.

  • WIN time will be committed to Independent reading work, which may include Word Work, or independent reading of self selected novel.

Homework: Students should read their independent reading novel for 30 minutes tonight and document their reading on their reading log.  Students also have 4 Word Work words to complete before the end of the week.

Wednesday

  • Students will begin the class with a rereading of "7th Grade" and then the completion of the comprehension quiz where they will use the text answer a series of questions.  The thought process I'd like the students to employ will be modeled with the first question.  Students will then take on the remaining questions on their own.

  • Following the quiz, students will complete the plot diagram for "7th Grade," exposing significant plot elements and structure.

  • The 2nd half of the block, WIN time,  will be committed to the I-Ready independent reading work.

Homework: Students should read their independent reading novel for 30 minutes tonight and document their reading on their reading log.  Students also have 4 Word Work words to complete before the end of the week.

Thursday

  • Students will begin class applying the re-reading strategy we practiced last week with this week's poem by Paul Laurence Dunbar, "We Wear the Mask."  Following their completion of their third reading of the poem, they will begin answering analytical questions about specific aspects of the poem and it's message.  We will discuss their observations.

  • Students will attempt to  paraphrase the three stanzas of the poem.  Their efforts will be compared to mine and discussed.

  • Students will then use the analysis pyramid to make some analytical comparisons between the poem and the short story we read and discussed the last two days.

  • WIN time will be committed to Independent reading work, which may include Word Work, or independent reading of self selected novel.

Homework: Students should read their independent reading novel for 30 minutes tonight and document their reading on their reading log. Students who have not completed their Word Work for the week may want to commit some time to it tonight.

Friday

  • Students will begin class the Friday Funny Bone activity.  This is an inferential activity where students examine a Gary Larson cartoon, draw conclusions about it, and construct a possible caption that attempts to not only make sense out of the image, but also make it funny.

  • We will discuss their progress on the comparison between the poem and the short story that we began yesterday and then students will be given remaining time to complete their comparisons.

  • We will use any remaining time to complete their "The Week in Review" along with the completion of any additional unfinished business.

  • WIN time will be committed to Independent reading work, which may include Word Work, or independent reading of self selected novel.

Homework: Students who have already documented 2 and 1/2 hours of independent reading and have completed their Word Work have no additional homework over the weekend.
