December 5 - 9 Assignments listed here represent the "Plan" for the week. Plans of course are subject to change as needed, so this should not be considered the last word on what will take place in class or will be assigned for homework. When plans do change however, the changes will be reflected here (hopefully by the evening of the day in which they are known to exist).

Wednesday December 21st. See Calendar on Monday for details on
where you should be with the project by now.

Ott Class Help Pass clip and use for the week of
12/05 Students who need extra assistance or
need to discuss their projects may clip this pass and use it to see me
Tuesday - Thursday in the morning before school.
Extra Help is available this week. Students may use this pass to get help with assigned work or to discuss Book Projects and Presentations. Students without passes may not be permitted to enter the building before school. |

Monday

Students will begin the day with
viewing a video giving them some background on Edgar Allan Poe, the
author of the poem we will be examining today.
-
Students will then complete a first
reading of the poem noting questions and observations.
Students will then read the poem a second time along with an audio
reading of the poem. They will again note questions and
observations.

Students will then join their
collaborative team where they will share and discuss their questions
and observations before discussing 5 questions that they come to
consensus on. They will note their findings and prepare to
share their observations with the class. Full class
discussion will follow, and finally students will independently
answer the "On Your Own" question.

document their reading on their reading log.
There is no Dialectic Response due this week, but students should complete
two new Word Work words by the end of the week. Students
should also be working steadily to complete their book projects and
presentations, which are due in two weeks.

Tuesday

Students will begin class with a
brief lesson on poetic structure.

Students will then independently read
"Second Estrangement" by Aracelis Girmay noting questions and
observations. Volunteers will then be requested to read the
poem aloud as the rest of the class follows along. Students
will again note questions and observations.

Students will then join their
collaborative teams where they will share and discuss their
questions and observations before attempting statments analyzing
both craft and structure. Results will be shared and
discussed.

Wednesday

Students will begin class exploring
the possiblity of Temperature being used symbolically in literature
and in life. We will look at several examples of of its use in
song and cinima and discuss.

Students will then apply a re-reading
strategy to the James Patrick Kinney poem, "The Cold Within."
Students will read the poem three times ranking their perceived
understanding after each reading. We will then view a
multimedia reading of the poem where visual imagery will be added to
supplement their understanding.

Students will then collaboratively
complete an analysis of an assigned aspect of the text and prepare
to share their findings with the class. As this will likely
take two days to complete, this will be finished during tomorrow's
class.

Thursday

Students will begin class examining
the terms on the back side of the poetry foldable that they began
constructing last week.

Students will then be led through the
collection of definitions and resources that are available on the
Sound Devices page of their interactive notebook. Students
will work in pairs examining the definitions and examples and add
that information to their foldable.

Students will then listen to music
clips that reflect these devices and test their ability to recognize
their use in popular music on the "More Sound Device Practice" page
in their interactive notebook..

Friday

Students will begin class the Friday Funny Bone
activity. This is an inferential activity where students
examine a Gary Larson cartoon, draw conclusions about it, and
construct a possible caption that attempts to not only make sense
out of the image, but also make it funny.

Students teams will then present
their analysis of "The Cold Within" if they did not get a chance to
complete this on Wednesday's class.

They will then use remaining time to
finish up their independent reading work for the week and make some
progress on the book project that is quickly coming due.

Students will finish the day
completing their independent reading and writing work and reflecting
on the Week in Review.
