November 7 - 11 Assignments listed here represent the "Plan" for the week. Plans of course are subject to change as needed, so this should not be considered the last word on what will take place in class or will be assigned for homework. When plans do change however, the changes will be reflected here (hopefully by the evening of the day in which they are known to exist).

Monday
-
Students will take the Unit 1
Benchmark test today. The test is not something students could
study for as it is simply an application of skills that we've
practiced over the last 8 weeks. The test consists of the
reading of two short reading selections, 9 multiple choice
questions, and 1 constructed response. The test will be
completed in StudySync.
-
Students will have the entire 90
minute block to finish the assessment.
-
Students who finish with time to
spare will use remaining time to read their independent reading
selection.
Homework: Students
should read their independent reading novel for 30 minutes tonight and
document their reading on their reading log.
There is not Word Work due this week, but students should complete their
5th Dialectic Response by the end of the week.

Wednesday
-
Students will begin class with an
introduction to the Kernel Essay. This is the beginnig series
of steps in preparation for the development of their personal
narrative, which we will be taking through the writing process over
the next few weeks.
-
Students will first brainstorm
moments in their life that impacted the way they think about some
aspect of life.
-
They will then complete three
sentences that follow a very specific structure. This will
then be used to write their Kernel...a three sentence essay.
This entire process will be modeled by Mr. Ott as he prepares to
write his own narrative.
Homework: Students
should read their independent reading novel for 30 minutes tonight
and document their reading on their reading log.
There is not Word Work due this week, but students should complete
their 3rd Dialectic Response by the end of the week.

Thursday
-
Students will begin class with the
Thursday Poetry Warm-Up. Students will read and respond to "Fat
Man" by Niall Janney. Students will identify images that
stand out to them within the poem and use emojis to identify the
tone of of the narrator as the poem progresses. Results will
be shared and discussed as we try to figure out what this poem is
really about.
-
Students will then go back to their
Kernel Essay and prepare to expand it to tell the story of the story
of the event that they wrote about. They will first identify
the significant sequence of events they neet to describe as they
tell the story, and then they will use the plot diagram to organize
those events and make sure they are planning the necessary elements
of a narrative. Once again, these steps will be modeled by Mr.
Ott as he plans the telling of his own story.
-
Students will be give classtime to
work on this, and most will have time to finish and work on their
independent reading work for the week.
Homework: Students
should read their independent reading novel for 30 minutes tonight
and document their reading on their reading log.
There is not Word Work due this week, but students should complete
their 3rd Dialectic Response by the end of the week.

Friday
-
Students will begin class the Friday Funny Bone
activity. This is an inferential activity where students
examine a Gary Larson cartoon, draw conclusions about it, and
construct a possible caption that attempts to not only make sense
out of the image, but also make it funny.
-
Students will then be introduced to
The Independent Reading Project that is due December 21st.
This is a project students will complete with their chosen and
approved independent reading novel. Students with a book in
progress need to discuss the book with me prior to assuming that it
will be appropriate for their project. Students who begin new
novels with this project in mind should also get approval from me
for their selection. This is not a project that can
satisfactorily be completed at the last minute, so students who have
difficulty managing long term projects should use their calendar to
establish some target dates for the competion of the parts.
Students are encouraged to get feedback from Mr. Ott as they work on
the development of their project as he will give them as much
feedback as they request along the way. Students who begin
reading and planning for the completion of the project early will
limit the amount of stress that can be experienced when one pushes a
deadline to the limit.
-
Students will finish the day
completing their independent reading and writing work and reflecting
on the Week in Review.
Homework: Students
should read their independent reading novel for 30 minutes tonight
and document their reading on their reading log.
There is not Word Work due this week, but students should complete
their 3rd Dialectic Response by the end of the week.
