February 5 - 9

Assignments listed here represent the "Plan" for the week.  Plans of course are subject to change as needed, so this should not be considered the last word on what will take place in class or will be assigned for homework.  When plans do change however, the changes will be reflected here (hopefully by the evening of the day in which they are known to exist).

All 8th Grade ELA  Classes  

Monday

  • Students begin class with a review of the planning process they began on Friday.  Discussion will focus on the decision that had to be made on how to organize the content of the essay after taking notes on the four texts that were read in preparation for it.
  • Students teams will then complete their plan for the paragraphs in the body of the paper.

Homework: Students have Dialectic Response due this week.  It may come from the novel they are currently reading or from the classroom reading this week.

Tuesday

  • Students will begin class with a review of the TREES writing process.
  • They will then view some background information on Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address before reading it themselves and determining the sentence that most clearly reflects the central idea of the speech.
  • Student teams will then complete the TREES graphic organizer and paragraph based on it before writing their paragraph on large paper to be shared with the class.

Homework: Students have Dialectic Response due this week.  It may come from the novel they are currently reading or from the classroom reading this week.

Wednesday

  • Students read and respond to an introductory paragraph.  Elements of the paragraph will be discussed and expectations for the introductory paragraph clarified.
  • Students teams will then plan the introductory paragraph for the essay we are currently planning.
  • Once the introduction has been planned, students will draft their own copy to share with their team mates.

Homework: Students have Dialectic Response due this week.  It may come from the novel they are currently reading or from the classroom reading this week.

Thursday

  • Students will read and respond to a conclusion paragraph.  Elements of the paragraph will be discussed and expectations for the conclusion clarified.
  • Students teams will then plan the conclusion paragraph for the essay we are currently planning.
  • Once the conclusion has been planned, students will draft their own copy to share with their team mates.

Homework: Students have Dialectic Response due this week.  It may come from the novel they are currently reading or from the classroom reading this week.

Friday 

  • Students teams will collaboratively draft one of the body paragraphs for the essay we have planned and share the results with the rest of the class.
  • Students will then complete the body of their own paper using the ideas generated by the rest of the class.

Homework: Students who have finished all assignments for the week do not have any additional homework.
